"I known too many other people tried to be what they wanted to be 'stead of what everyone else told 'em to be who fell flat on their faces. Would I rather be a playwright or a novelist instead of a factory girl? d**n straight I would, but I ain't arguing with the odds that say I can't. I'm a girl, I ain't got a dime to my name, and I'm a kid. Ain't nobody gonna care what I have to say. I'd rather do what I know I can do than what I think I might do," Spotlight said, her voice holding equal parts cynicsm and regret.

"I care what you have to say, and you should to." Slick said sighing "You shouldn't put on an act for the rest of the world. Thats what being a newsie is all about, not living by the rules. Have the time of your life not someone elses" Slick stood up and walked twards the door to leave. She looked back. "It's been nice talking to you Spotlight." Then she left.

Spotlight sighed and looked up at the cieling. Spotlight knew that Slick was right, but she couldn't get past the raspy, slurred voice of the wino in the alley behind her family's tenement who told her 'Dreams are for the rich, kid. The rest of us, we just survive any way we can.' She'd seen what dreams did to people like her. She didn't want to end up like them.
